Outdoors, group by group

What each group does outside

A caregiver holds a smiling baby at a window and points out a bird at a feeder
6 weeks to 2 years

Infants

Babies go out in a carrier, a stroller or on a blanket under the porch roof. Blocks outside are short, and between them the babies watch the birds from the window and sleep in the nap room whenever they need to.

A teacher catches a toddler at the bottom of a low red slide while two children wait on the platform
2 to 3 years

Twos

Digging, hauling and stomping, and carrying things from one end of the yard to the other. The mud kitchen and the sand are theirs for much of the morning.

A teacher and three children water potted vegetables with small watering cans in a fenced yard
3 to 4 years

Threes

The garden beds: seeds, watering cans and a long look at what is under the leaves. Walks follow the path at the edge of the trees.

A wooden playground with a yellow carriage climbing frame and slide among trees
4 to 5 years

Fours

Climbing, building and projects that run for days, like a stick fort, a bed of peas or a rain gauge. They help carry the snack bin out to the garden.
